After the conclusion of the competition, the Math Relays team celebrate their third consecutive championship.

Seventeen Hays High students competed in the Math Relays at Fort Hays State University’s Student Union on Nov. 11. Overall, the team placed first in the 4A/5A/6A division with 158.5 points while McPherson took second with 94 points. This is Hays High’s third consecutive year to win the competition.

Math Relays consists of six different tests on subjects such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry. For each test, there are individuals who are allowed to work on the test for the full 20 minutes and a team of three that splits the 20 minutes equally.

On each test, students are ranked based on how many questions they answered correctly. The top five individuals and teams earn points for their schools.

“I really enjoyed spending the day with my fellow mathletes,” sophomore Henry Fitzthum said. “Finishing first was just icing on the π. I’m so glad we got the opportunity for the three-peat this year.”
