Manteuffel to leave HHS for new job
Tears were streaming down the faces of many band members last week as band director, Craig Manteuffel announced that he would be leaving our school next year.
“I got a different job, different opportunities,” Manteuffel said. “That’s why I’m leaving. I got a very good job that I couldn’t pass up at this point in my life.”
Manteuffel and his wife will be moving to Topeka in June. He is going to join the Kansas State High School Activities Association staff as the assistant executive director on July 1.
According to the press release, Manteuffel’s primary responsibilities will be the administration of vocal, instrumental and orchestral music, piano, debate speech and drama activities, spirit activities (cheer and dance) camps and clinics, Citizenship/Sportsmanship programs, sanctioning of approved events and assisting with general administration of the KSHSAA.
“It was a disappointing day for all of us in band because Manteuffel has touched us all so much, so of course, everyone was crying,” junior Mariela Estrada said.
It is both hard for students, staff and Manteuffel himself to say goodbye.
“I really wouldn’t change anything,” Manteuffel said. “We’ve really enjoyed Hays High. This is my Alma Mater, I graduated here in ’81. Came back here to teach in ’96 and it’s been such a good experience. I love the people and I love the kids.”
