SAFE releases spring statistics

SAFE sponsor Lisa Renz says the program looks to decrease distracted driving for students.

Most students have filled out the seatbelt pledges given out by the SAFE program every month.

According to the program’s website, www.kstro.org/safe, the SAFE program is a program sponsored by the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office, or KSTRO, which is a part of the Kansas Department of Transportation and another organization. KSTRO’s focus is on “novice drivers” and issues relating to them like seatbelt usage and underage drinking.

“We are hoping to improve seat belt usage in students but more importantly, we want to decrease distracted driving for our students,” SAFE sponsor Lisa Renz said.

Renz shared the following statistics:

Fall of 2013

Summary
Percent of Drivers and Passenger Belted

94.8%

Percent of Drivers Distracted

2.6%

Mid-year 2014

Spring of 2014

Renz said that Hays High SAFE representatives recently attended a two-day conference in Topeka. Seniors Macey Pfeifer and Abbey Garrett took second place with their public service announcement video about distracted driving.
