Spirit Day Participation

Spirit+Day+Participation

During the week of Indian Call, the students of Hays High are encouraged to dress up on the spirit days and participate in the activities. The classes work against each other, competing for the most total points.

The total scores were: in first place, the seniors with 23 points, in second place, the freshmen with 19 points, in third place, the juniors with 18 points, and in fourth place, the sophomores with 10 points.  For each spirit day, the places are decided by taking the number of students from each class who dressed up and dividing it by the total number of students total in that class. For an example, on sports day 105 freshmen dressed up and there are 199 total freshmen, so they had 52.5 percent of their class participating. The percentages are then compared, and the places are decided from there.

While a few classes exceeded 50 percent on certain spirit days, most ranged from 10 percent to 49.5 percent. Seemingly, on spirit days like retro day, the participation was at an all-time low.

“I think that most students don’t participate in spirit days because they either don’t care, forget to, or don’t have anything to wear for the spirit days,” Sophomore Kirsten Prindle said. “My solution would to be come up with better, more fun spirit days.”
