DECA leads community-wide food drive
There are many hungry people in the world. Charities donated food and other items to those in need. One of these charities is Trick-or-Treat so Others can Eat.
“It is a food drive for the community assistance center,” teacher Shiana Prough said.
Oct. 8 was the collection date for this year.
“There were 25 community groups who went out and collected including DECA, Stuco, National Honors Society and Mrs. Michaelis’s leadership class,” Prough said. “DECA has been in charge of the food drive since 1984.”
Measures are taken to inform citizens of the organization.
“What we do is when we advertise or do interviews we ask citizens to put food out on their porch,” Prough said. “The different organizations go door to door in their assigned area of town and pick up the food.”
The collected food ends up in the community assistance food pantry.
“Families who meet specific income requirements can shop for free in the pantry four times a year,” Prough said. “They can also shop for clothing for free at any time.”
The number of canned goods reaches into the thousands.
“The count is currently close to 12,000 items,” Prough said.
Goods and items are will be collected up until Oct. 31.
I know some people whose items didn’t get picked up,” Prough said. “People might have been out of town or the person supposed to collect the items may not have collected.”
