Hays High School’s cross country teams season kicked off the season on Aug. 14 with practice and had their first meet at Great Bend on Aug. 31, with the girls placing third out of 12 teams, and the boys placing 11th out of 12 teams.
The following meet at Hesston on Sept. 7 ended with both the boys and the girls teams placing second out of seven teams.
At the most recent meet at home in Hays on Sept. 14, the boys landed third of three teams, while the girls were first of three teams. Also at this meet, senior Arely Maldonado broke a school record with a time of 19:00.3.

The next meet for the Indians’ cross country team is at the Rim Rock course in Lawrence on Sept. 23.
“Both teams have done well, considering the level of competition at the meets,” senior Elijah McCullough said. “The season has been going well so far, and we have all been running very well for this early in the season.”
