Girls swimming team competes at conference meet
The girls swimming team had its Western Athletic Conference (WAC) meet on May 11; this would be the final meet before state for Hays High School this year.
The competition started at 4 p.m. and ended at 7:30 p.m. The meet had a 30-minute delay after the first event due to a thunderstorm. This is mandatory precaution for swimming, saying that if there is lightning within eight miles of the pool, there must be a half hour wait before continuing to swim.
“The 30-minute delay didn’t really benefit us because we needed to warm up after,” junior Grecia Enriquez said. “However, it was nice just sitting outside and enjoying the weather.”
For the 200 freestyle relay, Enriquez, along with sophomore Izabel Schmidt, sophomore Kiera Dealy and freshman Lucy Tippy, placed second and received a silver WAC medal.
Schmidt also won first in 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle.
At the meet, the swim team also recognized senior Kiki Gonzalez, who has been on the swim team all four years of her high school career, for Senior Night.
