Lady Indian softball sweeps Great Bend
On April 19, the Indian softball team hosted the Great Bend Panthers for the first of their three-game series and won on a walk-off in the bottom of the eighth inning.
After the Indians captured a 9-3 lead after three innings, the Panthers tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, and the Indians were unable to score in the bottom of the inning, leading into the top of the eighth inning.
Junior Elle Dreiling hit a walk off single, scoring sophomore Dezarae Schmidt to win the game, 11-10.
Sophomore Aubree Thomas pitched the game for the Indians and had four strikeouts and three walks.
After a day’s break, the Indians traveled to Great Bend for the final two games of the series, winning both.
The first game of the double header was a 11-1 win for the Indians, with runs being scored in every inning but one.
Dreiling, Schmidt, sophomore Lakyn Zimmerman and junior Ashlyn Zimmer all had two hits, and Dreiling hit a home run and drove in two runs.
Freshman Riley Dreher, Thomas and Zimmerman also drove in two runs apiece. Dreher pitched the game and had two strikeouts and one walk.
After a single run scored in the first inning, the Indians were unable to score more until the sixth inning where freshman Lauren Klein would steal home and tie the game 3-3.
The Indians were able to score to final runs in the seventh to close out the game.
Thomas pitched the game for the Indians and had seven strikeouts and two walks.
The Indians are now 5-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference, and they will travel to Garden City on April 25 for a makeup double header against the Buffaloes.
