Boys tennis competes in Abilene, Great Bend

The varsity and junior varsity boys tennis team competes in Abilene and Great Bend.

On Wednesday, April 28, the boys varsity tennis team competed in Abilene after having the meet postponed three times.

Players from Hays included junior Ryan Schuckman, sophomore Jack Scoby, freshman Xavier Catura, freshman Colin Clark, freshman Logan Daniels and freshman Henry Fitzthum.

No. 1 Doubles were played by Daniels and Fitzthum, who won against Concordia (8-6) and Chapman/Abilene (8-1). They then lost to Clay Center (7-8(2)) and Abilene (4-8). They ended with third in their bracket.

No. 2 Doubles were played by Schuckman and Scoby, who beat Abilene (8-7(5)) and Abilene/Chapman (8-4). They lost to Concordia (6-8) and Clay Center (3-8). The two players got fourth in the bracket.

No. 1 Singles were played by Clark, who beat Clay Center (8-1) and Chapman/Abilene (8-4) but then lost to Concordia (2-8) and Abilene (1-8), getting third in his bracket.

No. 2 Singles were played by Catura. He beat Clay Center (8-3) and Chapman/Abilene (8-3) but also lost to Concordia (4-8) and Abilene (1-8) to get third in his bracket.

Hays ended up with third place in the meet in Abilene.

“Overall, everybody that played went 2-2,” head coach Kayla Brown said. “It ended up being No. 1 Singles got third along with No. 2 Singles. No. 2 Doubles, Ryan and Jack, were in a tie for third and ended up getting fourth. So, as a team, I think getting third was good.”

On Thursday, April 29 the junior varsity players went to Great Bend. The team that competed in Great Bend consisted of junior Jonathan Tate, sophomore Logan Chance, sophomore Alex Li, freshman Carsen Riat, freshman Logan Schmidt and freshman Conner Stanton.

No. 1 Doubles were played by Chance and Tate, who lost to Hoisington (7-8(2)), Meade (2-8), Cimarron (1-8), Haven (2-8) and to Hoisington/Scott City substitute (0-8). They got last in their bracket.

No. 2 Doubles were played by Riat and Schmidt, who lost to Hoisington (2-8), Meade (4-8), Cimarron (1-8) and Haven (3-8). They then won their last round against the Hoisington/Scott City subs (8-0). They got seventh place in the bracket.

No. 1 Singles were played by Li, who lost versus Hoisington (0-8), Meade (0-8), Cimarron (1-8), Haven (0-8) and Hoisington/Scott City subs (1-8) to get last place in his bracket.

No. 2 Singles were played by Stanton, who also did not win any of his matches against Hoisington (0-8), Meade (1-8), Cimarron (1-8), Hoisington/Scott City subs (0-8) and Ellsworth (2-8) to finish last place in his bracket.

Hays got eighth overall at the meet.

“It was a good last regular season thing to get everybody to play,” Brown said. “It was a gorgeous day right before we finish out the season next week with WAC.”
