The boys’ varsity tennis team had their first meet in McPherson on March 8 with six players competing.

On Tuesday, March 30, the varsity boys tennis team participated in its first meet of the season in McPherson.

Only six players were able to participate in the meet, including senior Edgar Alonso, senior Gabe Garcia, sophomore Jack Scoby, freshman Colin Clark, freshman Logan Daniels and freshman Henry Fitzthum.

“For the first meet and with some tougher competition, I was pleased with how the team did and the wins we got,” head coach Kayla Brown said. “Now they have competition experience to build off of for future meets.”

The teams that competed in the meet were Derby, Great Bend, Hays, McPherson, Newton, Salina South and Winfield.

First-place champion was Jadon Fox from McPherson (4-0), second place was Ty Kraemer from McPherson (3-1) and third place was Isaak Bowman from Derby (3-1).

From Hays High, Garcia placed 13th (2-2) and Alonso got 14th (1-3) in singles. Clark and Fitzthum placed eighth (1-3) and Daniels and Scoby got 16th (0-4).

“Now that the players are aware of other teams’ abilities and of the pace of a meet, we can work more on placing the ball when hitting it, improving serving and continuing to play hard even when exhaustion is setting in,” Brown said.
