Girls golf takes first at Great Bend, wins WAC title
After posting a one-stroke victory over Garden City at the Great Bend Invitational, the Lady Indian golf team secured its first WAC Championship in eight years.
The Indians ended up with 1298 total strokes in the five tournaments that counted toward the championship. That was 15 better than second-place finisher Garden City with 1313 strokes. The Indians defeated Garden City in every tournament, for them by only one stroke and the other by 11 strokes. Taking third was Great Bend, followed by Dodge City and Liberal.
The top six players from the tournaments are named All WAC conference players. This year, four Hays players earned that honor – Katie Brungardt, Rhian Patterson, Taylor DeBloer and Lexie Schaben. Elissa Jensen was named honorable mention. Coach Mark Watts was named WAC Coach of the Year.
At the Great Bend tournament, the Indians finished with a 189, followed by Garden with a 190 and Dodge City with a 228. Liberal and Great Bend took the final two spots with a 229 and 230, respectively.
Individually for Hays, Schaben took second with a 45, followed by Brungrandt in third with a 46. DeBoer also medaled in sixth with a 48, as did Elissa Jensen and Patterson in eighth and 10 place, respectively. Summer Smith also competed and finished with a nine-hole total of 52.
The golfers now prepare for regional action on Oct. 13.
