Football suffers first loss in weather-shortened game
In a game delayed and then called at halftime due to weather, the football team suffered its first loss of the season, a 35-0 homecoming shutout to Garden City on Sept. 27.
Three consecutive turnovers in the first quarter proved devastating to the Indians as the miscues lead to a 21-0 first quarter lead. The three turnovers – two fumbles and an interception – came on the first three Indian possessions of the game.
On its fourth possession, Hays was forced to punt and it was returned for another Garden City touchdown to make it 28-0 with 11:07 left in the half. The final Garden City touchdown came at the 5:15 mark in the second quarter after the Buffaloes scored on a 68-yard run to make it 35-0 at the half.
During halftime homecoming festivities, the rain started, but the two teams returned for a brief time to begin warm-ups. However, the two teams were sent to the locker room and the stands were cleared due to threatening weather. After a 50-minute delay, the two teams mutually agreed to call the game.
The next action for the Indians, now 3-1, will be at Wichita South on Oct. 4.
