Indian football moves to 3-0 after 52-38 win at Liberal
Those who like a football game with lots of offense were not disappointed with Friday’s Liberal-Hays High game.
The two squads compiled more than 800 yards of total offense in a contest that saw Hays outlast Liberal, 52-38.
The Indians, now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in WAC play, will host Garden City on Friday at Lewis Field Stadium.
It didn’t take long for the scoring explosion to get underway at Liberal as the Redskins took the opening kick-off and drove the ball into the end zone for six points. Liberal, which does not attempt field goals, ran the ball in for the two-point conversion to make it 8-0 with 9:25 left on the first quarter clock.
On the ensuing kick-off, Liberal showed another one of its tendencies in that it always attempts an onside kick after it scores. On this night, however, Liberal was not successful on any of its attempted short kicks, which gave Hays excellent starting field position.
The Indians wasted little time as they put together a five-play drive that was capped by a 21-yard touchdown run by junior Alex Delton. Hays kept place with the Redskins and added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8 with 8:09 left in the quarter.
Liberal was forced to punt on its next possession, and again, Delton scored on a run to provide Hays with a 15-8 advantage with 4:00 still left in the first quarter.
A long drive by Liberal on its next possession came up short, and the Indians took over on downs at their own 29. Ten plays later the Indians scored to make it 22-8 with 6:51 left in the half.
Liberal made it 22-14 at the half after putting together a 75-yard drive just before the half.
After the intermission, Hays scored to make it 29-14, a touchdown that was answered by Liberal to make it 29-22.
A short time later, Hays put up another seven points to make it 39-22, but Liberal marched the ball right back down the field to pull with six points, 36-30, with 3:16 left in the third.
A few minutes later, Hays scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to jumped out to a 44-30 advantage. Liberal took the ensuing kick-off and moved the ball to the Hays 12-yard line, but the drive stalled after a good defensive effort by the Indians.
Liberal wasn’t done yet, however, as it got the ball back and this time would not be denied the end zone as the Redskins pulled within six, 44-38, with 2:33 left in the game.
Another onside kick by Liberal was recovered by the Indians, which put together a 50-yard drive to put the game out of reach, 52-38, with 1:42 left to play.
