Food should be allowed in GPS

Michael Schmidt and Noah Huxman studying in GPS.

It’s my sophomore year here, and within my first few weeks last year as a freshman I started to wonder why I couldn’t have a snack in GPS.

During GPS I sit, work on homework, occasionally doodle, and for the majority of my time, I think about going home and eating.

In every other class throughout the day I am allowed to have food so why not this one? I know that I am not alone when it comes to wanting to be able to eat in this class.

Often I hear people complaining about the food ban in GPS. By food ban, I mean no food or drinks. Like, at all. That includes candies too, such as gum or mints.

Sure I can understand why gum might be banned in the Lecture Hall, there are cushion chairs in there. People somehow got it into their heads that it is okay to put their chewed gum all over the place.

Now on the other hand, I believe that things like chips, crackers and dry cereal should be fine.

Those types of snacks really aren’t that messy, and if one of the supervisors in the room sees that you are making a mess, they can just tell you to put the food away. Or if it’s really needed, they can just take it away. It is their job as supervisors to watch us, right?

Keeping that in mind, I really don’t see why having food would be a problem.

There’s also the thought that having food could distract students from doing their work, but what makes food in GPS any more distracting than having food in math or English?

However, if a student’s snack is really so exciting that they quit working on whatever they’re supposed to be, then I want to see what this kid is eating.
