The Problems with Modern Music
Several popular songs I listen to on the radio are sad things to hear. While I will admit that some songs are fine because of the beat and the actual music behind the lyrics, the lyrics themselves are another story. They’re trashy, sexual, and just flat out lazy. There is nothing inspirational behind them. But not only are they lazy, they’re so overdone.
The themes we use to bring in common consumers today have been used for decades. To be honest, the music industry just keeps marketing and promoting partying, getting drunk, having sex, sexual references, and a ton of other inappropriate characteristics. They’re just not cool or original anymore. If Hollywood wants to give people something new, treat them like intelligent human beings who can control themselves.
Recently in my Psychology class I watched a video that talked about ads and what’s in them. The woman presenting said ads that enter the brain are processed through 8% of the conscious mind. The rest is subconscious. I can’t imagine how lyrics influence our minds not just consciously, but also subconsciously, because either way it affects us.
I’m aware that most people have other music to listen to that’s not popular, but my biggest question is how do the songs that are popular become popular? I suppose it’s because of the beat or maybe the music video for it, but other than that there’s usually nothing that’s inspiring and really can make you think. It’s also not very relatable. Most people’s lives aren’t filled with the themes they promote all the time. If someone who didn’t know anything about earth listened to our popular music, they would think that we’re all drunk, sexual, drug users that only care about those things.
I find that inspiring, uplifting messages affect people much more than negative messages. We as a society are so used to negative themes, that promoting good, uplifting themes are new and fresh in people’s minds. If Hollywood would stop promoting so much negative messages, society would most likely improve in behavior and the way people view life. I am aware that we won’t reach a perfect world, but at least people could start respecting others.
