Hays High School Student Council hosted a “Winter Wars” event on Thursday, Dec. 12 and Friday, Dec. 13, starting during PRIDE Time on Dec. 12 and ending during PRIDE Time on Dec. 13 with a big final match in Gym A. Overall, the Winter Wars winner was junior Wade Hollis.
For the Winter Wars, each student and staff member received a beaded necklace to start with. To get more necklaces, students had to challenge each other by playing “Rock, Paper, Scissors,” with the winner taking all the loser’s beads. Also, in order to challenge a teacher, students had to have at least 15 necklaces; to challenge an administrator, they had to have at least two teacher necklaces.
“We wanted to have a fun competition at the end of the semester that everyone could participate in,” StuCo sponsor Luke Lundmark said. “It was on social media from a few schools, and it seemed like a fun idea.”
There were some changes to this year’s Winter Wars from last year, which was the first year for the event.
First, while last year’s wars lasted only one day, this year’s wars spanned two days as a way to get more students and staff involved in the game.
Also this year, if students lost all their necklaces, they could purchase one beaded necklace from StuCo for a fee of $2. Although no extra necklaces were bought, according to Lundmark, had they been, all of the proceeds would have gone to StuCo to make events more affordable for students, such as how Indian Call will be free for all students, due to fund-raising projects like this.
