The annual Maroon and Gold Kickoff was held on Friday, Aug. 26 on the Hays High School football field. The kickoff is a way to introduce the fall sports teams.

Even though the event is typically held at Fort Hays State University’s Lewis Field Stadium, turnout for the kickoff was good, and overall, the event went well. The Athletic Booster Club held a free-will donation barbecue at the event, and the band played as well.

At this event, the senior football players drafted teams to scrimmage each other. Originally football was the only sport showcased in this event, but the program has evolved to include more teams, such as the Hays High soccer team and the Hays Middle School football team.

“I think this event was a huge success,” senior Kenzie Cunningham said. “I loved seeing everyone’s first showcase of all our school’s awesome talent. I look forward to successful seasons all around!”
