Cross Country, DECA participate in Turkey Trot

Hays Recreation Commission held its annual Turkey Trot 10k and 5k races on Saturday, Nov. 6.

Both Hays High School cross country and DECA participated in and helped with the race.

Four students from cross country competed in the race, including sophomores Brenlynn Albers, Leo Hernandez, Jaycine Watson and Julia Zadina.

DECA members that volunteered at the race included seniors Chris Goodale, Madelyn Martin and Aleyia Ruder and juniors Blake Buckles, Nia Kaiser and Tanner Werth.

“Both this year and last year, I have volunteered for the Hays Rec Turkey Trot through DECA,” Martin said. “I run an aid station and hand out waters to runners.”

The next DECA-hosted volunteer opportunity will be the Pack the Pantry on Saturday, Nov. 13. Students can sign up to volunteer in the office.

“I enjoy volunteering because I think it is a meaningful experience that can bring out the best in people, and it is also reassuring to know that you are helping others,” Martin said.
