Shawn Henderson, principal for the 2021-2022 school year, attended the Site Council meeting on May 5 to get an idea of how the council is run. He will take over as principal after principal Martin Straub retires at the end of this year.

Site Council met for the last time this year on May 5 in the Hays High library.

Principal Martin Straub updated the council on COVID statistics.

“This has been the ninth straight consecutive week that we haven’t had a positive or staff or student positive COVID case,” Straub said.

Straub said these numbers are the reason that Hays High can limit wearing masks these past few weeks.

“We make decision based on numbers,” Straub said. “It’s important that we stand up to that and tighten things down when numbers go up.”

Since COVID numbers are so low, Student Council will be allowed to host an all-school games assembly on May 14.

“It’s a little bit of a risk for a principal at a 5A school to say ‘Let’s have an assembly on the senior’s last day of school,’” Straub said. “That would normally be a bad idea, but honestly, the kids have done everything we’ve asked them to do, and I really do trust that StuCo will do a good job.”

In addition to the assembly, Hays High’s Achieve Team will also host a student and staff appreciation barbeque that day during lunch, and weather permitting, students will have a 30-minute lunch period where prizes will be awarded.

“It’s been a year,” Achieve Team member Matthew Whitney said. “We’re celebrating getting through the year. We’ll have brats and burgers and lots of prizes.”
