The junior varsity Scholars Bowl team took first place in WaKeeney at the Trego Community High School Invitational on Wednesday Nov. 2, competing against Ellis, Hill City, Hoxie, Norton, Oakley, Oberlin and Stockton.

The JV team consisted of freshmen Brooks Baczkowski, Elijah McCullough and Addison Otte, as well as sophomores Darian Dodd-Spencer and Bradyn Dreher.

The team was dismissed from school at 2:45 p.m. and were on the bus by 2:50 p.m. Each of the seven rounds lasted 15 minutes, and the team was arrived back in town by 6:30 p.m.

Despite several changes to the meet due to COVID-19, such as disinfecting between rounds, limiting contact and not sharing pencils and other materials, the meet went off without a hitch.

“This meet is often held in high regard by our fellow participants/competitors and often goes smoothly,” Dodd-Spencer said.

The meet went quite well, though the success was not too much of a surprise for those competing.

“The meet went really good, seeing as we got first place,” Otte said. “We walked in expecting a first-place finish.”
