Fighting the snooze button

If you are like most students, waking up early can be a challenge, especially with the freedom you had to create your personalized sleep schedule during the quarantine.

Having a good morning routine can be essential to waking up early. According to VeryWellMind, productivity coaches suggest that daily habits can be an indicator of increased productivity and achievement.

Although coaches have many different ideas on the best daily habits to have, most agree that how people begin their day has a massive impact on how the rest of the day seems to turn out.

Senior Ashley Vilaysing has followed the same morning routine since freshman year.

“I believe the key to waking up early is to approach it with a positive attitude,” Vilaysing said. “Nothing is worse for waking up early then immediately thinking, ‘This is too early. I want to sleep.’ I wake up and feel excited for all that will be accomplished that day.”

Vilaysing said she believes continuing her routine every year of high school is what contributes to her waking up with ease.

“I think what makes waking up early easy is that I just wake up, sit up and start the day,” Vilaysing said. “That’s it. No snooze button, no complaining, just get up.”

VeryWellMind also states that creating a morning routine is not focused on who can accomplish the most than everyone else. Instead, it is about allowing yourself to start your day with confidence and the boost you need.

For junior Seren Sumaya, hearing her alarm go off is the worst part about her mornings.

“I follow the same routine every morning,” Sumaya said. “I wake up, take a shower, brush my teeth and get ready for the day. When I’m finished getting ready, I go to Starbucks. Following the same routine every day makes my mornings easier because everything is organized and timed out perfectly, so I don’t have to worry about anything.”

The morning routine helps students set the tone for their day. Consistent morning routines help prioritize their time, and ultimately increase their productivity.

Many students have probably heard that consistency is key, which held true when discussing routines with fellow students. Based on student opinion, practicing consistency will help your morning routine feel effortless and beneficial over time. The more you practice being consistent, the easier it becomes to stay consistent with new habits.
