Chess team takes second at Concordia tournament
The Chess Club competed with a team of six at a tournament in Concordia on Feb. 1.
The consisted of freshmen Noah Bruggeman and Seth Gillock, sophomores Elizabeth Dickman and Xinxuan (Alex) Li and juniors Jonathan Garner and Raiden Hartman.
The team took second place overall, and individually, Bruggeman placed sixth, Hartman placed ninth, Garner placed 10th, Gillock placed 13th, Li placed 14th and Dickman placed 18th.
The team is somewhat new to competing, with this being the first tournament for three of the team’s members.
“For having such a novice team, I am absolutely thrilled with how they performed,” sponsor Erin Holder said.
Holder said she was initially nervous for this season after losing many seniors from last year, but things have turned around for the team.
“Not only do we have a good group of freshmen, but we have new players of all grade levels,” Holder said. “I am looking forward to what the future will bring to these students and this club.”
