During the Kansas Honor Scholars reception on Oct. 21, 18 seniors were recognized from Hays High, as well as students from surrounding schools.

The Kansas Honor Scholars Program, a University of Kansas tradition, honored 18 students from Hays High. All students recognized were in the top 10 percent of their class.

The students recognized consisted of seniors Joanna Carrillo, Nathan Erbert, Megan Flavin, Lynsie Hansen, Levi Hickert, Allison Hillebrand, Tucker Johnson, Ethan Klausmeyer, Nathan Leiker, Madeline Lohmeyer, Abbey Oborny, Noah Oborny, Kallynn Petz, Isabel Robben, Jimmie Roe, Madelyn Waddell, Madison Weber and Taylor Weidenhaft.

Students learned that they were selected via Principal Martin Straub, who gave each students a letter from the association.

“Mr. Straub brought a couple of us into his office and gave us the letter,” Waddell said. “He was congratulating us for all of our hard work and told us how to RSVP.”

The program hosted a ceremony to celebrate the selected students on Oct. 22 at Thomas-More Prep Marian High School.

At the event, students from surrounding towns’ high schools were recognized alongside Hays High School and TMP. There, they received medals on stage, honoring their dedication.

Scholars are applicable for KU Alumni Association scholarships, $1,000 renewable for four-years. Those planning to attend KU are eligible.

Although some scholars may not be inclined to attend KU, the recognition is still an honor and a resume booster.

“I was happy that my hard work paid off,” Waddell said. “I feel really good about myself. I plan to attend KU, so I will be definitely applying for the scholarships.”
