The 2018-2019 debate season came to a close when four debaters competed at the 5A KSHAA Regional 4-Speaker debate tournament that was held on Dec. 15 at Salina South High School.

Representing Hays High on the affirmative side was junior Joanna Carrillo and freshman Shelby Alexander.

Juniors Elliot Hoar and Noah Oborny represented Hays High on the negative side.

“They competed in a high caliber pool, which included: Valley Center, McPherson,  Newton, Great Bend, and Salina South,” instructor Codi Fenwick said. “The two schools advancing to the finals were undefeated with national circuit experience.”

With tied records, only one ballot determined Newton as first place and Salina South second. Both of those teams advanced to the 5A 4-Speaker State Championship which will be held Jan. 11-12 in Garden City.

“I, unfortunately, was not able to attend the meet because I had other obligations,” Fenwick said. “However, I heard from other school’s coaches that I have a lot to be proud of. I have been very proud of all of my debate students throughout this entire season.”
