The members of the first Foreign Language Honors Society of Hays High celebrate with a formal ceremony.

The Foreign Language Honors Society (FLHS)  is a new organization, which held its induction ceremony in the library on Thursday Nov 8.

FLHS co-sponsors Lora Gallegos-Haynes and Matthew Whitney were excited to  present the charter “Las Villas” which means the path.

“Our motto is: ‘Todos a uno’ – all together,” Gallegos-Haynes said.

This group consists of eleven member, including the officers.

Officers are president Garret Rymer, vice president Jackson Elkins, secretary Emily Goetz and treasurer Yesenia Maldonado. Other members are MacKenzie Fagan, Dellilah Herrera, Mason Ibarra, Kenia Macias, Scout Perryman, Maribel Rodriguez and Pedro Ruiz.

The induction started off with president Rymer welcoming and thanking everyone who attended, followed by secretary Goetz giving background information on how the organization was founded.

The poem Excelsior! written by Nunez de Arce was then read and translated in Spanish by treasurer Yesenia Maldonado. Vice president Elkins was given the honor to read the oath of the society to the public.

Each student then received a medal and certificate to award their membership.

“The members are just like an honors society,” Gallegos-Haynes said. “They will have service projects, volunteer work and activities to show pride in what they are capable of accomplishing.”
