Future Farmers of America put on Spring Flower Sale to raise money for program

The future farmer of America are having a spring plant sell to raise funds for various activities they participate in throughout the year.

The Future Farmers of America (FFA) class instructed by Curt Vajnar will be selling a wide variety of plants at 3:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. on April 27 and at 9 a.m. till 11:30 a.m. on April 28 in the Hays High Greenhouse located in the E-Building.

Their first day of sales was on April 25.

“We did very well, the day before it was kind of rainy and cold, so we always get nervous about that, but the weather hasn’t been that great this spring, so I don’t know if people have spring fever yet,” Vajnar said. “We did okay.”

The flowers available for purchase include geraniums, marigolds, pansies, impatiens, moss rose and petunias. They will also have tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers along with hanging baskets of geraniums, petunias and ice plants.

The plants are grown by students in FFA. The Spring Plant Sales is just one of the many activities FFA takes part in throughout the year.

“Crops and Soils did the planting this year, next year I’ll actually have a whole class, but if you’re in FFA, it’s part of our requirements to participate in all of the activities,” Vajnar said. “There is a scoreboard out in the hallway where we keep track and then at the end of the year, we have another activity that those did everything can go to. The last few years we’ve been going to Kraus pond. We have a fishing tournament and the smallest fish gets a fishing pole and the biggest fish gets a fishing pole. So, if you’re lucky you’ll get a fishing pole.”

The money raised from the sale goes towards other activities they class does.

“We use the money to pay for our activities,” Vajnar said. “Next Friday, we do three things during the year, FFA engagement kind of stuff. We do bowling in the winter, we do dodgeball and volleyball, it’s kind of a good time, but we’re going put-putting which is kids in boots put-putting which has quite the entertainment value. Tonight, we are going to the district banquet, we have two kids actually running for the district office. Ashton Ottley will be up for president, or vice president, and Colton Vajnar reporters treasure. That meal alone cost 14 dollars, everything we do costs money, that’s where that money goes, pays for bills.”

There are plenty of plants yet to be sold and everyone is encouraged to come out to the sale.

“I don’t want any plants here when it’s over cause then you have to figure out where they go home,” Vajnar said. “Please come out and support Hays High and the FFA program.”
