Chamber Singers to perform at Victoria Cathedral
On Sunday, Dec. 3 the Chamber Singers will perform in the St. Fidelis Basilica in Victoria at the CAT or Cathedral Concert.
The St. Fidelis Basilica is one of the eight Wonders of Kansas, and is also called the Cathedral of the Plains.
The Chamber Singers have become a regular on the FHSU Cathedral Concert through Dr. Terry Crull’s invitations each year, instructor Johnny Matlock said.
“We are excited to perform two pieces at the CAT Concert,” Matlock said. “Both pieces are very appropriate for the Cathedral sacred space.
“The first, “My Lord Has Come,” is a piece I first heard on a VOCES8 CD. The dissonant harmonies combined with a beautiful melody builds to reverberating high points that will only be enhanced by the acoustics of the Basilica.”
The Basilica has a reverberation time of around five seconds, which means their singing needs to be spot on, because if it is not, every mistake will be heard for five seconds Matlock said.
“The second piece is a fun calypso style piece that I found on an a capella web site — a site devoted to a ‘Pitch Perfect’ style of music,” Matlock said. “The piece modulates no less than three times building to an incredible last chord. That chord will ring for five seconds. I can’t wait.”
