Looking back 10, 20, 50 years ago

The Guidon staff has decided to include a monthly feature in which it will look through past editions of the newspaper to see the new events that were being reported 10, 20 and 50 years ago during each particular month.

October 2007

  • Acronyms and abbreviations took over teenage life.
  • $1000 prize at stake in DECA Monopoly tournament.
  • The Foreign language department sponsored trips to Italy, Greece, and Costa Rica.
  • Fantasy football becomes popular among students.
  • Josh Munsch won the Western Athletic Conference.
  • “So You Think You Can Dance” tour came to Kansas City.
  • The Guidon gave $10 to different couples to see what activities they could come up with for a date with that amount of money.

20 Years Ago
October 1997

  • House of Representatives minority leader visits Hays High.
  • A twelve-year-old freshman attended Hays High.
  • Spirit Club became the largest club in school.
  • The internet was beginning to become more popular.
  • Kelly Tauscher was selected as a Wendy Heisman nominee.

50 Years Ago
October 1967

  • The art classes split to more individualized focuses.
  • 13 students visited France for a class.
  • Hays High Alumni dies in Vietnam
  • The first Spanish club meeting took place.
  • A Volkswagen costs $1,791.
