Self-defense seminar to take place at Hays High

A free self-defense seminar taught by FHSU Defense Tactics will be taking place from 9 am-12 noon on April 1 at Hays High.

Hays High alumnus Kevin Rounkles, one of the organizers and instructors for the event, said he aims to teach students how to defend themselves in a variety of situations. Even though it mostly benefits women, he said, it’s important for men to have good knowledge of self-defense as well.

“Although women are the victims a vast amount of the time, men can be too,” Rounkles said.  “Most men feel as if they can protect themselves, but you can always add more tools to your toolbox.”

Rounkles has background experience with both Kansas law enforcement and the military, which have allowed him to become more familiar with the working of self-defense.

“I chose my career path because I love helping people,” Rounkles said.  “I take dating and sexual violence very seriously because of its continued prevalence in society. It is an issue that tends to be swept under the rug until it actually occurs. Self-defense is something everyone can benefit from in order to prevent violence.”

The seminar is free and open for anyone to attend.
