Dane Hansen finalists talk interview preparation
February is just around the corner which means Dane Hansen scholarship interviews are looming ahead. The select few seniors who are in the running for the prizes are double checking their assigned time and date and making sure they know about the latest news in their area of study.
“I was chosen for the Dane Hansen interview because I had taken the Dane Hansen test,” senior Hannah Thomasson said. “If you did well, then you got an interview. The test consisted of different sections like vocab, math, art and humanities, and science and two essays. One essay was about yourself and another with a prompt provided to you. If you did well, then you got an interview.”
For the interview, the applicants have to travel to Logan for a 15 minute session with three or four judges.
“I am not sure what to expect, really,” senior Sierra Eichman said. “I know that it is a formal interview and they ask us about what we wrote in our essays.”
Besides inquiring about the questions, students are to come prepared with background knowledge on current events and a possible mission statement for their future.
“I think it’s going to just be an interview asking about why you deserve the scholarship, what your future college and career goals are, and what your ultimately going to do to give back to society,” Thomasson said.
Preparation is in the hands of the seniors going in, besides the tips on what to be ready to talk about, so each student decides for themselves ultimately just how ready they want to be.
“For the interview I have learned more about the organization and I’m practicing my interview skills,” Eichman said.
Another key tip from past years is to dress the part of someone who would be receiving a scholarship.
“Well I bought my business attire,” Thomasson said. “So that’s a good start. I have looked over some typical interview questions, but that’s about it.”
Best of luck to all seniors heading into their interviews this February.
