Changes to graduation requirements leave students with mixed feelings
The 489 school board had a meeting Monday night and made the decision to change graduation requirements.
Students will now only be required to take one Health and Wellness credit, instead of two. In replacement, an eighth elective credit will be needed in order to be eligible for graduation.
“I don’t agree with it just because school is some kid’s only way of getting physical activity,” Senior Kylie Brown said. “If it isn’t required those kids won’t be meeting the needs of their bodies.”
Junior MKilar Otte agrees.
“It doesn’t really affect me at all because I have more than two credits and I like PE and weights,” Otte said. “However, we should probably still be required at least two credits to fight against obesity since it is such a big problem.”
Many students argue the reduction is a good thing and allows for more opportunities.
“It allows students to take other classes instead that they either wanted to do, or that would help prepare them for college.” Freshman Rebekah Porter said.
