How likely is a school shooting?
According to www.everytownresearch.com there have been 150 school shootings in America since 2013. Then according to www.rt.com, there have been 52 shootings in this year alone.
One shooting that has hit the news lately occurred at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. The publics’ thoughts on the likeliness of a school shooting vary.
“I’ve been here for 22 years and I just have to hope and pray it never happens,” Principal Martin Straub said. “You never know really, it could happen anywhere.”
Some students think the probability of a student being able to open fire on the school could possibly happen.
“I think that it could maybe happen,” freshman Madison Lisman said. “You never know when people are going to snap.”
Teachers have set plans if a shooting ever occurs. This procedure is taught to students at the beginning of the year. Even with this drill students feel unsafe.
“The drill we do, in my opinion, isn’t really effective,” senior Jordyne Williams said.
With all of the shootings that have happened within this year many students feel that their certainty of their safety is decreasing.
“I think it’s very likely, a lot of students have guns,” sophomore Rylea Barrett said. “Some kids here are pretty unstable in my opinion.”
