Students express feelings toward annual event
As homecoming week quickly approaches, students prepare for the plethora of activities that will go on.
Homecoming week includes activities throughout the entire week, such as an assigned spirit day for each day of the week, assemblies, the football game and the homecoming dance.
Most students plan to participate in at least one aspect of the week.
“I don’t know which things I will do,” senior Tanner Moore said. “But I do plan to participate.”
Other students have decided to include themselves in most activities.
“I’m going to do the dress up days and go to the game and dance,” sophomore Riley Spears said.
Junior Jeanie Balzer is most excited for the football game.
“The football games are always fun,” Balzer said. “They’re a great opportunity to hang out with friends.”
Balzer believes the level of fun an individual has during homecoming week is up to the individual.
“It’s as fun as you make it,” Balzer said. “If you really get into it, it’s very fun, but if you let it pass by like any other week then it has almost no significance.”
Homecoming also deserves the hype it receives, Balzer said.
“I don’t think it’s overrated,” Balzer said. “This is Hays and there’s nothing else to do so what’s the harm in glorifying a week to dress up and have fun?”
Others find the week to be subpar.
“All of the students agree that homecoming sucks,” Moore said. “It’s pretty much unanimous. There may be a few people here and there who really think it’s fun, but not a lot. It’s not really that exciting.”
Spears said homecoming has the most potential when you’re a senior.
“I think it’s only really fun if you’re a candidate or a senior,” Spears said. “It’s more oriented towards them.”
Senior Bethany Kuhn was elected as a candidate.
“Being a candidate is such an honor,” Kuhn said. “It really surprised me when I got called and I think it’s a great and fun experience that I’m blessed to receive.”
Kuhn said she is very excited for all the activities.
“I’m so excited,” Kuhn said. “I’m ready to embarrass myself at the games assembly. I think the assembly should be really fun. I’m also excited to just hang out at the game which I don’t normally get to do. Honestly, any of the times that we just get to hang out and have fun is what I’m most looking forward to.”
