Chamber Singers perform at annual cathedral concert in Victoria

This past Sunday, Chamber Singers took the stage, or stairs in this case, once again. The group was invited to perform at the annual FHSU St. Fidelis Cathedral Concert in Victoria. The Chamber Singers sang two pieces, “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen and the premier of Dan Forrest’s piece, “The Shepherd’s Lamb.” Flutist Mel Sauer and oboist Kay Werth accompanied Chamber Singers on “The Shepherd’s Lamb” with Chamber Singers. The piece was commissioned by the choir group after they sang Forrest’s “Requiem For The Living” at Carnegie Hall in New York City, back in June.

“I love hearing all the Christmas music from people around the community,” senior choir member Sydney Vahling said. “But I strongly disliked how the concert was over two hours long.”

A variety of performances were witnessed at the free concert. Choirs and ensembles were invited from all around the district. The concert was approximately two-and-a-half hours long.

“I think it went really well for Chamber Singers,” senior choir member Shelbie Berens said. “I enjoyed listening to all the groups perform and the instrumentalists, however it did seem to drag on after a bit.”

Other members of Chamber Singers agreed.

“I think the concert went well overall,” junior choir member Kinsey Ackerman said. “I liked the variety of groups and the different types of pieces that were performed. I disliked the length of the concert.”

Although the concert was lengthy, the singers pulled through and look forward to their upcoming performances.

“I think the cathedral concert went really well,” Vahling said. “Our pieces of music sounded really good, like we finally put everything together and made something beautiful.”
