New and improved internet system
This year, the internet system was updated, providing students with faster internet and better connection.
Brian Drennon said the CCU staff is reconfiguring the CORE network and replacing every switch at the school to provide 16bps port speed at all wireless access points.
“Our previous network had a lot of 100Mbps port speed limitations so upgrading to 1Gbps ports will allow us have more capacity to our network,” Drennon said. “This will enhance our LAN speed and ability to get to the internet quicker.”
The internet connection was also upgraded from70Mbps to 125Mbps.
“Our wireless network was an older 802.11g network which was limited on speeds,” Drennon said. “The new 802.11n wireless infrastructure allows a lot more speed and can handle a lot more users than the older 802.11g.”
When deciding what to upgrade to, Drennon said they looked at what the needs were and the limitations from the existing infrastructure.
“We asked for vendors to come in a showcase their product and explain to them our issues and how their product would fit our needs,” Drennon said.
The staff made sure not to go too far over budget.
“The extra costs would have been wants more than needs,” Drennon said.
