Poetry Out Loud Competition
The annual Poetry Out Loud competition will start on Jan. 13 with the local competition. From there, the winner will be able to compete at regionals.
The local competition is going to be held on Jan. 13, 2014 at 6:00 p.m at Hays Public Library in the Trish Davies Room. All interested students must have their forms turned in to English teacher Kathy Wagoner by Jan. 7 to be allowed to compete.
Poetry Out Loud is a contest held every year for high school students in which they must memorize and perform poetry in front of judges. They receive scores based on stage presence, accuracy, voice, complexity level and overall performance.
For the local level, a student must have two poems memorized. One must be a poem from before the 20th Century and one must be 25 lines or fewer. The winner of the local competition will progress to the regional one which this year will be held on Jan. 18, 2014. There they must recite the same two poems.
The next level is state. It will be held at the Lawrence Arts Center this March. Students must have three poems prepared for this competition. If they progress to the Nationals, they will recite the same three poems. The winner of state is awarded $200 and an all expense paid trip to Washington DC for the national finals.
The winner of the national competition will be awarded $20,000.
