“Waiting to Spill” by The Backseat Lovers is their second studio album.
Coming out in 2022, just three years after their first studio album, “When We Were Friends” (2019), this album has deep emotional connections and follows a central theme of growing and undergoing harsh realities of time.
With a short run time of 47 minutes and only 10 songs, the main concept of the album remains constant throughout with a lack of upbeat, pop influence as compared to their first record.
The opener, titled “Silhouette,” is a mostly instrumental song with a short array of words towards the end. The dark nature, but more cliché songs are in the next few tracks, including “Close Your Eyes” and “Growing/Dying.” Shortly after, the album’s biggest hit, “Snowbank Blues,” has a more authentic and less electronic sound. This track focuses on the coming of snow, telling another tale of time passing and growing from experience. I believe this to be the climax of the album, as the dark nature follows in the remaining tracks, ending with a heavy hitter titled “Viciously Lonely.” This is my personal favorite song on the album, cutting into the listener with its relatable and heartfelt nature.
This album tells a broken story with its lyricism and desperate cries throughout. I find this album to be their best album to date and can confidently rate the album a high 8 or low 9.
