“Transformers One” is the newest reboot of the Transformers franchise of movies, but done in an animated style to pay homage to the original Transformers television show. It felt like reliving childhood in a new light on the big screen.
The movie follows the characters of Orion Pax and D16, as we see them evolving to become who they are in their well-known forms of Optimus Prime and Megatron respectively. This movie does an amazing job of showing how these two went from being best friends to the greatest foes.
“Transformers One” did a fantastic job at envisioning the story of the Transformers, with the setting on their home planet instead of the trope of them being on Earth. It also told the familiar stories uniquely enough to be engaging throughout the movie, not just during the action scenes, but also during exposition and even comedic situations.
The movie included actors I did not expect going in, but there were some big names in the production, including two co-stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Scarlett Johansson playing Elita One and Chris Hemsworth playing Orion Pax (Optimus Prime). These two were joined by Brian Tyree Henry as D16 (Megatron) and Keegan-Michael Key as B127 (Bumblebee). The four made up the main cast of this movie, and the chemistry was great, as they all worked very well together.
Outside of my view, there have been superb sales and rave reviews for this movie, with it grossing almost $320 million in the United States and more than $390 million internationally, making a combined $710 million to date, which is only about $126 million under the highest grossing Transformers movie. The movie has yet to leave the theaters, which gives it a chance to get even closer to the highest grossing Transformers movie. Along with its high grossing sales, it also got an amazing score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 89 percent critics’ review and a 98 percent on the audience score.
Overall, I think the creators of “Transformers One” have set up this movie to be the start of a franchise of animated movies set on Cybertron, maybe leading up to when the Autobots and Decepticons find themselves on earth.
