“Big Hero Six” Movie Review
This last Friday, Nov. 7, the new Disney movie Big Hero 6 came out into theaters. The movie is about 105 minutes long and grossed 56.2 million dollars in the opening three days. It’s also based upon the Marvel comic Big Hero 6 that released the first issue in September of 1998.
Big Hero 6 is a story about a 13 year old genius named Hiro Hamada who graduated high school and decided to go apply to his brother’s college after his brother, Tadashi Hamada, convinced him to stop bot fighting for money. As the story progresses, Hiro meets Baymax, a health caretaker robot that his brother made, and the two create a bond with one another. Hiro decides to go after a villain that attacked him and Baymax with the help of his friends from college, Honey Lemon, Wasabi, Fred and Gogo.
Coming from me, a huge Disney and Marvel fanatic, I really enjoyed this movie. Now that Disney can use Marvel and Star Wars license, I thought the idea of making a Marvel movie animated was a great idea. Not only that, but the story was good. (Spoilers ahead) After Hiro’s brother Tadashi died, you really felt for Hiro. The turning point of the story with Hiro finding Tadashi’s videos was awesome. The way they animated Hiro’s face and created a believable scene was really great (Spoilers done).
The bond between Baymax and Hiro was so genuine, that part of you believed Baymax wasn’t a robot. But they did a good job on balancing Baymax’s humanity and cybernetic side. But to be honest it felt like I was watching a version of DreamWorks’s How to Train Your Dragon. The storyline was very similar with Hiccup and Toothless relationship and Hiro and Baymax’s. Both had friends that in the end backed up the main character and climaxed with a big sacrifice but then had a happy ending. Hiro and Hiccup are also incredibly smart and the test flight sequence in Big Hero 6 reminded me a lot of the test flight sequence in How to Train Your Dragon.
Overall this movie was really cute and a new way to watch Marvel movies. It’s a rollercoaster of feelings a lot of the time and a great movie to see if you want something relaxed and light-hearted. If you do go see it, stay till after the credits for an extra scene (this is Marvel anyway). I’d give this movie an 8 out of 10.
