Instructor Heath Owens talks about his teaching experiences
When asked about his experiences at Hays High, Heath Owens had mostly positive things to say about his experiences with students and events at Hays High.
“I was nervous about the block schedule because I’ve never had to do that before,” Owens said. “I was also nervous about teaching at a bigger school, but I’ve had positive experiences here with the students, they work hard from what I’ve seen.”
Mr. Owens seems to have adjusted well, according to the students that enjoy his unique sense of humor and teaching methods during class.
“I like him because if we don’t understand something he helps us get it,” sophomore Lisa Schoenberger said, “Plus he’s really interactive with us.”
Owens moved from Lacrosse last year and came to Hays High this year to teach Biology and be an assistant coach for the football team.
As a Biology teacher, Owens mostly teaches sophomores and some freshman in his classes.
As one of the younger teachers, students find it easier to relate and talk to him about things since he is closer to their level.
“I like how he speaks on our level,”sophomore Sara Wise said. “He talks like one of us.”
He’s a hit among the lower grades according to Sarah Wise and many others of his students.
“I enjoy getting them interested in science,” Owens said. “But I don’t like all the apathy I see during class from kids.”
Owens would like to see more participation and enthusiasm from kids in his class, but otherwise he enjoys his classes and getting the chance to teach kids all about logical and independent thinking.
After thinking of what he wanted to see from Hays High students, Owen said he’d like to see the students be more thankful to have the opportunity to have a good education.
