Shoes screeched against the gym floor. Two teams competed against each other; Colby versus Hays. The 30th Annual Hays City Shootout began at 6:30 p.m. last night, Nov. 29.
The Shootout is a tournament, consisting of three days of basketball games between various high school teams in Kansas. Located in two different places, Hays High School and Hays Middle School, the tournament attracts many people to the Hays area.
Hays basketball fans filled the bleachers to cheer their favorite team on to victory. Both the boys and girls teams won their game against the Colby Eagles.
“Both teams did very well,” junior Megan Dinkel said. “I was proud of them.”
However, some students believe that the support for the two teams is not the same, and believe more support is needed.
“I went to support the girls, mainly,” senior Kendahl Garrett said. “Everybody supports the guys but nobody supports girls’ athletics. At the boys’ game everyone stood, and no one stood for the girls’.”
For the team, the outlook is different from those in the stands.
“I think the game was a little rough at the beginning, but we got the hang of it,” senior Taylor Herman said. “I’d say it went pretty well.”
