Traveling the world, while staying in Hays, is what the newly reinstated International Club wishes to achieve. International Club had their first meeting on Sept. 11. The adult sponsor is Ann Adams and the student leader is Alyssa Reed.
“It looks really good on a resume,” Reed said. “We’re hoping to do some volunteering. When I was involved a few years ago, we had fundraisers to build a school in the Middle East. It’s also a great way to meet new people and learn about other cultures.”
Adams wants to get the group involved with a project her son in the Peace Corps brought up. It would be an exchange of videos and photos with children ages 8-14 in West Africa. The main goal of this project is to inspire the children, attending school in a low income area to continue going to school and get a good education. Adams is hoping to achieve this by sending photos and videos about our lives in the USA. Her son says that the kids are really interested in learning about life here. In Benin, the village of Ganek Perou, families must sacrifice to send their children to school.
Times when the group isn’t working on the project, they will have ‘Country Night’ in which someone will pick a country and present photos. Also, there might be a guest speaker, and a favorite part of the night is the presenter picking a new recipe from the country and attempting to recreate it.
The group’s upcoming projects include assisting DECA with ‘Trick or Treat So Others’ Can Eat’ on Oct. 9. The next meeting will be Oct. 23 at 7 p.m., and will be a ‘Country Night’ featuring the chosen country, Germany.
