Students compete at welding competition
On Friday March 6, a Gas Metal Arc Welding Contest was held at NCKTech Beloit.
Hays High placed 10th. Sophomore Lane Pfannensteil placed 8th, junior Wade Woydziak placed 16th, and senior Nathan Rohr placed 18th.
“I was pleasantly surprised,” Pfannensteil said.
There are certain things the students had to do to prepare for the competition.
“Before competitions we have to study building symbols, and work on building techniques,” Pfannensteil said.
Welding teacher Todd Taylor says the students practice all position welding, print reading and interpretation using those weldments.
“We have several weldments from previous years,” Taylor said. “To prepare we also measure weld size and use a larger size wire than normal.”
