Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout
The 31st annual Hays City Shootout took place on Dec. 5, 6 and 7. Also at the shootout were Garden City, TMP, Great Bend, Riley County, De Soto, Newton and Colby.
Many were there to support and cheer for their teams.
The halftime performance was performed by the dance team two nights and the cheer team one night.
“I’m not particularly interested in sports but I performed at half time for dance so I stayed to watch,” senior Breanne Kruse said. “The last game for the boys was intense and I’m glad that the boys’ team did so well. I know the girls did their best and hopefully they will improve throughout the year.”
The first night of the shootout, the girls’ team lost to Riley County, 54-27. They then played at Hays Middle School and lost to De Soto, 56-29. The girls were unable to secure a win during the shootout but still gave a good effort.
“Playing at the shootout is a lot of fun and the fans that come and watch are the best,” junior Emily Peckham said. “I think our team has a long road ahead of us but we play well as a team. All we need is a little bit of confidence.”
The boys’ team won their first game against Riley County, 79-37. The second night of the shootout the boys’ team won against Newton, 60-35. They then won the championship game the last night of the shootout against Garden City, 57-53. After remaining undefeated, the boys’ team took first at the shootout.
“Playing at the shootout was a blast,” freshman Shane Berens said. “I had never played in front of so many people and our student section was really good. I think our team did good, but there’s always stuff to work on to keep getting better.”
