Hays ATM robbery creates talk amongst students

Stir has been circulating around the school about the Cerv’s convenience store robbery. On Tuesday, March 22 at 5:44 a.m., the Hays Police Department received a call stating that the Cerv’s at 2722 Hall Street had been broken into and the ATM had been stolen.

According to video surveillance, the robbery took place at around 1:30 a.m. when the suspect tied a chain around the ATM and drove off. The ATM was removed from the building in 2-3 minutes.

Sophomore Graci Tomlinson said she thinks the reoccurring robberies in Hays are strange.

“There’s a new story on the news practically every day about a robbery in our town,” Tomlinson said. “Who in their right mind would just rob an ATM?”

Junior John Legleiter said he’d heard about the robbery through other students.

“Everyone was talking about it in one of my classes,” Legleiter said. “I hadn’t even heard about it until then. But it’s weird that a robbery like that would happen in such a small town.”

Senior Scott Ring was also surprised to hear about the burglary.

“People do ridiculous things when they need money,” Ring said. “I hope they catch the suspect soon.”

Senior Tanner Moore has a different perspective.

“If the people who stole the ATM get away with it, they deserve it,” Moore said. “That ATM is huge and no one apparently even realized it had happened until a few hours later.”

Sophomore Taya Randle said she believes the people responsible need to come forward.

“I personally believe the robbers are definitely from Hays,” Randle said. “No one from out of town would know that Cerv’s existed.”

Randle added that she hopes the increasing popularity of the burglary story gets the suspects arrested.

“It’s a serious deal,” Randle said. “If they’re capable of taking an entire ATM out of a store, they could be capable of so much more.”
