Sophomore Gavin Nutting wrestles at the Bob Kuhn Tournament on Jan. 25 at Hays High. At state, Nutting finished in fifth place in his weight division.

On Feb. 28 and 29, Hays High School participated in the boys state wrestling tournament at the Hartman Arena in Park City.

Senior DaVontai Robinson and sophomore Gavin Nutting went to state this year. At state, Robinson finished in sixth place, and Nutting finished in fifth place in their weight classes.

Coach Heath Meder said that he was very satisfied with the results.

“We took three to state, and all three placed, so I was extremely happy,” Meder said about the results from both the boys and girls state tournaments. “The guys and the girls did really well.”

There is one thing that Meder wishes that he could change concerning the wrestling season.

“I wish we could’ve been in a different regional,” Meder said. “Our regional was probably the hardest regional in the state out of all classes, which meant it was harder to get more guys to state. I wish we could have had a few more and get through to that state tournament from regionals, but it does make it easier when you get it to the state tournament to place if you come out of our regional with a placing there and getting to go to state. It does make placing at state easier.”

Despite the challenge of regionals, Meder said he was pleased with the results from state.

“I’m extremely happy for them, proud that they got on the award stand and got to bring some hardware,” Meder said. “Now, we’re looking forward to next year and bringing home even more.”
