With 12 teams there and 80 students, Hays placed first overall. With the national qualifiers being on Sept. 19 they are learning more and getting prepared for more success.

This being the first competition of the year was a gamble on how students would do in competition.

“We did well,” FFA instructor Curt Vajnar said. “You don’t know what to expect with the first one.”

While there students judged land sites and whether they would be viable ground to plant crops or build on.

“I have no idea what they were going to do,” Vajnar said. “They are pretty smart so I figure out we would know how to manipulate it, you just don’t know how they are going to apply it while we are there.”
