Experiences of a life guard

Beads of sweat flow, the sun is beating down, skin starts to turn red, kids are screaming, water is splashing and whistles are being blown for a 15 minute break. All of this is a typical view of a lifeguard.

Although being a lifeguard might sound easy and relaxing, the job can be exhausting according to a few lifeguards.

The work to be done before being a certified lifeguard is also not all that simple.

“The training was pretty tough but I think it was definitely worth it,” senior Austin Chambers said.

To become a lifeguard, senior Alexa Steinkuhler said you have to learn appropriate ways to save someone.

“You have to know how to save them in all areas of the pool including slides and the diving section,” Steinkuhler said.

Just knowing the process of saving someone isn’t the only portion of becoming a lifeguard. Junior Summer Smith said there were multiple things to learn.

“You have to be certified through American Red Cross, so I did my training through the Hays Aquatic Park,” Smith said. “We have to complete a 300 meter swim without stopping, a brick test with a limited time, and also pass a CPR test.”

Junior Lexi Schaben added that they had to do a treading water drill.

“I usually got whatever task we had to do within one try,” senior Lane Clark said.

The five lifeguards all said that although getting the job took some dedication, they enjoy being a lifeguard in the summer.

“It is a very nice job. I love the people I work with and hours at the aquatic pool are very flexible,” Smith said.

Steinkuhler does like the job too, however, the heat sometimes gets to her.

“I dislike when it becomes very hot and you are out there all day, Steinkuhler said “The job definitely drains you and all you want to do is sleep by the time you get home.”

A very important key to be a lifeguard is always staying alert, but some young kids don’t like to follow the rules.

“I hate dealing with the same kids every day that know the rules but still don’t follow them,” Clark said.

Chambers recommended to future lifeguards to not hesitate to ask questions.

“You will definitely regret it later if you don’t.”

Being a lifeguard has pros and cons but all five lifeguards said all the work is worth it.

“I am always around people I enjoy working with and being in the sun all day is a plus,” Schaben said “I also like seeing children have fun and just having a good time, being a lifeguard is a very positive environment to work in.”
