After collecting 37 points total from all of their wins, the journalism staff became the 4A Sweepstakes champion of 2018.

Thirteen students participated in the state journalism contest held in Lawrence on May 5.

Those who participated in on-site contests include seniors Lacey Gregory, Amiyah Gonzalez and Elizabeth Lee; juniors include Isabelle Braun, Emily George, Hannah Harman, Jacob Maska, Scout Perryman and Taylor Schiffelbein; sophomores include Allison Hillebrand and Madison Weber. Senior Alyssa Owens and sophomore Cassidy Prough also attended but did not compete.

“I’ve enjoyed getting so close with everyone involved with journalism,” Owens said. “I am so proud of everything we have accomplished, but I’m also sad knowing I won’t be a part of this great group next year. Being in Yearbook the last three years has been so much fun and a great learning experience, but I’m ready to see what the future holds.”

While at the competition, the Guidon staff also accepted the All-Kansas awards for the newspaper and online.

“I am very pleased with the results that we got from our hard work this year,” Gregory said. “I hope it sets a trend for years to come.”

With a total of 37 points awarded after all of their wins, the journalism staff became the 2018 Kansas Scholastic Press Association 4A Sweepstakes champion.

“Being named All-Kansas online and then Sweepstakes winner within a week is just incredible,” instructor Bill Gasper said in an e-mail. “I am so very blessed and grateful to have such a talented group of students in the journalism program who put up with me on a daily basis.”
