Earthquakes? Students discuss never feeling the quakes rattling parts of Kansas

Social media blows up almost each and every day with news of yet another earthquake shaking areas of Kansas.

In the past month alone, there have been 11 earthquakes with at least a magnitude of 2.

While the graphic above only shows earthquakes with a 2 magnitude, there have been 189 total earthquakes in the month of September.

According to ksn.com, scientists have linked the sharp increase in earthquakes to the underground injection of waste water by oil and gas companies.

However, students like junior Ryan Will haven’t been able to feel these earthquakes.

“I wish I could have felt them,” Will said. “I’ve never felt any of the earthquakes we have apparently been having, and I think it would be kind of neat to experience that. I mean, it’s apparently a big deal if people keep talking about it on the internet.”

Senior Brent Koenigsman said he would also like to feel the earthquakes.

“I thought I felt one a few days ago,” Koenigsman said. “But I’m not really sure. It’s pretty strange how often we seem to be having them this month.”

Junior Tana Herreman said she thinks the world might be ending.

“I’ve never actually felt any of the earthquakes,” Herreman said. “But, if we’re really having this many earthquakes this often, it may be a sign.”

Senior Tanner Callis said he believes the quakes are due to fracking.

“I think it’d be kind of cool to feel an earthquake,” Callis said. “I haven’t ever felt anything yet, but it’s obvious that they’re happening.”

Have you been able to feel the earthquakes?
